~  What House Resolution 4437 Will Do If It Becomes Law  ~

~ What H.R. 4437 Would Have Done If Not 4 La Gran Marcha ~

It would turn any U.S. citizen and others who help undocumented workers or people who are over-staying their visas into criminals It would turn all undocumented workers and people who are over-staying their visas into criminal "felons" for being "civil-status" violators. Currently, it is only a civil misdemeanor violation to be in the U.S. without permission or "unauthorized alien" documentation. This proposed law would make it a "felony" for anyone to be in the United States without proper documentation. This includes anyone from around the world that may be seeking political asylum; escaping poverty and other hardships from countries that don't have an amiable or functioning government; temporary professional workers, students, and vacationers who have over-stayed their visas It would prevent any person and/or organization in assisting an undocumented person to remain in the U.S. Any such persons or organizations that aid an undocumented person would become guilty of “smuggling”. It would criminalize the humanitarian good works being done by attorneys, churches, clinics, employers, hospitals, mosques, refugee agencies, schools, social service organizations, temples, and others •  It would turn local law enforcement officials into federal immigration agents. It would deputize local and state police to enforce federal immigration laws. It would discourage civil-status violators in reporting crimes if they are victims. Local law enforcement officials will be forced into a position of enforcing federal immigration laws while losing abilities and assistance from their respective communities in the fight against local crime It would further prevent people without proper documentation from receiving health care and professional counsel which would further endanger the overall health and stability of America and our continent It would fence the complete southern border with Mexico - while leaving the northern border to Canada open.

Discussion on Immigration Reform Legislation Will Resume After the Congressional Spring Break of 2006
